I decided to send my friends and family a picture of me “shoveling the sunshine” on a day that turned out to be a blizzard in both Winnipeg and Portland, OR.

I guess it was inevitable that one day I would find proof that I was not a real grown-up.  It all started innocently enough.  I was sitting around in my cozy chair one day, midway through the kids’ summer break and the thought popped into my head that I should start a list of things that my husband (The Man) and I needed to teach our 12 year old daughter (The Girl) and 15 year old son (The Boy) to do, so they could become successful adults.

I asked my friends and the best local Mom’s group on Facebook, MOMnation, for suggestions.  They poured in; some that were on my list and so many more that were not.  After scouring the suggestions, putting it in detailed fashion in a document and posting it online, my good friend, Lindsay, asked me how many of those things could I do.  I realized that I didn’t know how to do half of them.

How could it be that someone who is almost 50 could have gotten this far without having learned so many essential life skills?  For starters, I married the best husband ever and I have amazing friends and family.  That accounts for most of it but it is not an excuse.  I still need to know how to do this stuff by myself.  I need to become self reliant, my kids are watching.  So I’m on a mission.

My mission is to become a real grown-up.  And I’m dragging my kids along with me.
